US Pay for Plasma Advertisements

The below adverts were placed in newspapers across the United States between 1976 - 1985. Plasma was harvested from often high-risk paid donors (a practice long forbidden in the UK) and in turn sold to Pharmaceutical companies who would use the Plasma in the creation of Factor VIII & IX blood-products.

Targeted collection of Hepatitis Positive Plasma

In the race to develop a Hepatitis B vaccine for the general population, some Plasma collectors purposefully targeted individuals who had been infected with Hepatitis in order to use their anti-bodies. Unfortunately, the left over plasma was often sold-off to be used in Plasma fractions such as Factor VIII & IX. Unbelievable but true.
