Factor 8 urges Chancellor to take infected blood compensation action

Factor 8 has urged the Chancellor of the Exchequer to help promptly implement the compensation recommendations made by Sir Brian Langstaff in the second interim report of the Infected Blood Inquiry.

Jason Evans (Director of Factor) wrote to Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP on Friday, following last week's debate in the House of Commons. The letter details the deep-seated distress within the community due to the delay in establishing the ALB and the lack of interim payments for those victims whose deaths remain unrecognised. We emphasised the need to take urgent action in light of Sir Brian's recommendations.

The final compensation report, published in April, advocates for the swift establishment of a compensation scheme and suggests an interim payment of £100,000 to victims previously overlooked. The aim is to provide some relief for immediate suffering before the full compensation scheme comes into effect.

The call to action comes after the government's slow response to the issue, despite the consensus between Sir Brian Langstaff and Sir Robert Francis KC on compensation matters. Factor 8 seeks the immediate implementation of the recommendations, emphasising the victims and their families deserve no less.
